What's at stake: China has been secretly developing CPUs and GPUs for years, but it has recently attempted to speed up existing projects with little success. We still hear about another modest advance achieved by a Chinese company every now and then.

So far, we've seen a lot more activity in the CPU market from Chinese firms like Zhaoxin, which are attempting to produce x86 processors that can catch up to and eventually compete with Intel and AMD's offerings. GPUs, on the other hand, have not received nearly as much attention.

Jingjia Micro (also known as Jingjiawei) is one notable exception, as it began as a joint military-civilian firm developing and manufacturing military-grade electronics. After successfully launching China's first domestic GPU almost three years ago, the business announced it was working on its own discrete high-performance graphics card.
